A Bible Well Used

By: Tim Kroeker

...continued

Joy and relief accompanied Maria that day as she cried out to God, “Save me! Save me!”

I wanted to leave my old Bible with her to now study and learn, but she insisted that she could not take it. So I agreed to a trade. She would keep mine and I would keep the little white ceremonial gift.

It turned out to be a pretty good trade.

The next week when I came by to visit we went back to John 3 and talked again about being born again. Jesus said that it’s like the wind, you can’t see it or where it comes from but you can see it effects.

“Maria, have you noticed any changes in yourself this week?” I asked.

Each evening before bed she had read her new Bible. She also read to her husband and then they would talk about it until they drifted off to sleep. “It used to be that the only thing that we had in common was our son. Now there is something else that unites us,” she said.

Before, the Bible was seen as some stale piece of religiosity that would be much too difficult to enjoy or understand. It was no more valuable than a trinket to be buried away in the closet. “Now every time I read it I find such beautiful verses. It feels like God is speaking directly to me.”
